iGoogle is a great way to manage your life under one page. Checking your mails, RSS feeds, managing your schedule, chatting with friends on a single page has been done by Google quite well. iGoogle keeps on refreshing automatically so that users get updated content even if they have left the iGoogle open for some minutes. This reduces the load on users to refresh it manually every time but it has been annoying users in some cases when your gadgets refreshes when you don’t want them to.

Many users have been asking Google to provide this feature as optional. Google surely needs to work on its iGoogle API and should provide individual refreshing settings for all the gadgets. This will help users as well as it will let developers customize their applications more deeply.

How to Disable iGoogle Auto Refreshing Functionality?

1. Using refresh=0

Adding ?refresh=0 to the iGoogle link will not stop iGoogle from refreshing automatically but practically it extends the time between two refresh. This is the most simplest and effective way I have discovered. Though this method will make iGoogle to refresh slowly but if the above method don’t work for you try the next one.

Link: http://www.google.com/ig?refresh=0

2. Changing Browser Settings

iGoogle uses meta tags to refresh it. We can change settings in browsers to not to allow refreshing of pages. This can be done as following:

In Internet Explorer, you can change the settings in browser on weather to allow pages to automatically refresh or not. This can be done by Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Custom Level -> Allow META REFRESH (Enable/Disable). Un-check the box in order to block pages from refreshing. Note: This will also stop other pages and websites from auto refreshing and thus some web apps might not work properly.

For Mozilla Firefox, you can download a plugin named RefreshBlocker and set up a blacklist. Add iGoogle to that blacklist. This will only ban certain pages from refreshing. Note: Please change the list type to blacklist else the all the other sites will be blocked other than in the list.

How to Enable iGoogle Auto Refreshing Functionality?

On the other hand some people face problem that iGoogle is not automatically refreshing.

If using Internet Explorer, make sure that Meta Refresh Checkbox is checked. This can be done at Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Custom Level -> Allow META REFRESH (Enable/Disable).

Firefox users should check if any addon life RefreshBlocker or so is not installed. Addons like ReloadEvery can reload iGoogle or any other website or page after a defined time.

Till today a huge part of Internet users use Internet Explorer. And those who have switched to other browsers already know the annoyances of it. Developers face major challenges while coding their websites and making it work properly on Internet Explorer. Continuing the annoyance, a recent bug in Internet Explorer causes web pages fail to load, popping a error “Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet Site – Operation aborted”.

This error is mainly caused as the Internet Explorer fails to understand certain heavy java scripts embedded in a page. From past month Life Baker also became a prey of this bug. I hardly use Internet Explorer and thus I failed to notice this bug. One of my friends pointed out that Life Baker is not opening in Internet Explorer and is yelling such error.

The Solution:

I googled up for the solution and found these two links. All you have to do is remove all the Java scripts from your websites and them place them back one by one while checking your site after each addition in Internet Explorer. You will actually have to remove the functionality from your site which the faulty JavaScript did.

At our site a tag cloud used heavy JavaScript and was causing this error. Some sites suggested to replace the script outside the body tag but nothing worked and finally I removed it and chose a lighter alternative.

For Internet Explorer users, point this out to your favorite websites about the bug so that they can work on it. But I would highly recommend switching from the Internet Explorer to any other browsers like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.

And lastly I would like to thank my friend for notifying me about the bug.

The dynamic duo of Greasemonkey extension and Firefox gets in action with a script to show off your unread email count of Gmail Inbox in the favicon. A must-have script for the Gmailers or (frequent Gmail Users)!

For those who don’t know about favicon, its a small image appearing at the top with the title that show a small logo of the website you are currently on. Like if you are on Life Baker you will see a icon as “LB” near the title or you see a “M” shaped envelope icon while using Gmail. It is used to quickly recognize the tab without reading its title.

What this script exactly does is shows off the number of unread messages in the favicon itself. It shows blue “M” icon for Gmail accounts and for other hosted domains the “M” icon is turned blue. However the script has a limit of 10 mails. If your unread mails in GMail inbox exceeds 10 mails, it shows off 10+ icon rather than showing the count.

Gmail is smart enough and shows off the unread count in title but still this script get handy while you have opened many tabs and the width of the tabs have decreased. It also forms a great combination with Faviconize extension with which you can hide titles of Firefox tabs.

The script requires Greasemonkey extension and the Firefox itself. Download the script from Userscripts.org website.

Keep your kids safe online while providing them the power of Internet. Checkout the browsers specially designed for your kids.

Internet have been nice medium to gain knowledge, keep in touch with friends, entertainment, etc but it is also polluted with bad guys and other abusive content. You want your kids to be smart and can grow while gaining information about the technologies so that when they mature up, they are ready for the real competitive world. But the problem is you don’t want to expose off your kids to the bad part of internet. Then how would you go for this?

Well you can go for the special browsers or modify the current one’s to protect your kid. These browsers will basically teach your kid while keeping them off the unwanted content of the Internet. These browser makers handpick the content and websites which are suitable for your kids.

KidZui:

A Firefox add-on which completely modifies the interface of the browser and it is optimized for safe browsing for kids. It provides the completely hand picked content which is suitable for your kid to browse around. It has hundreds of kid-friendly websites, video’s, pictures and more ready for your kid to explore.

It also sport some smart abilities, when enabled it doesn’t allow the kid to close the browser or even block them from opening other applications. Thus it will also save you from your kids deleting an important file on your PC. As it is built on Mozilla’s engine, it makes KidZui stand out from other kid browsers and providing safe content to your kids.

Kidoz:

Kidoz Browser is a very friendly kid browser. It also features the hand picked content for your kid and has very clean environment which is designed in such a way that kids feel very comfortable browsing on it. Kidoz Browser requires Adobe Air to be installed and runs on it and is available for free.

BuddyBrowser:

BuddyBrowser has many unique features which others don’t have. It supports Games, Movies, Music, Tv and a whole lot of safe stuff. BuddyBrowser provides educational information channels and it also sports safe messenger for kids. BuddyBrowser also has tied up with SafeSurf to filter the content for kids.

Kidrocket:

This browser is another one in the race. The plus point in this browser is it allows kids to send and receive emails. It is a single EXE program which creates a folder where the exe is placed whenever the exe is run.

These browsers will surely keep your kids safe over the internet but they do have some limitations. You cannot add site to the lists they can visit. Concluding, we recommend using KidZui over others as it has a strong base beneath and has also got smart capabilities.

The Firefox had been a great browser but what if sound gets disappeared from it. This has happened with lot of Firefox users. If you are also one of the victim of soundless Firefox problem and are annoyed with soundless video's, then we have a solution for you.

Over the past two months Firefox had been troubling me (and some other users too). While playing YouTube Videos I could see the motion but cannot hear the sound. Frustratingly, I had to open each video in Google Chrome. I checked out lots of forums over the net to find a solution but nothing worked. Some advised to upgrade the flash version while others suggested downgrading but result was nil.

Things got worse even more. My flash got corrupted in this upgrading and downgrading. Finally I have found the solution of what was causing the problem. Here are a few steps to take to correct your sound problem in Firefox:

1. Windows Vista Sound Mixer:

This is the main culprit for many of the users. Actually Windows Vista Sound Mixer has been left unnoticed by many Vista users. It features a separate tab of volume control for each application trying to play sound. The Firefox gets mute over there and with my conclusion its some of the FLV converters which is causing this mute. My Firefox sound was muted after I installed some FLV converters. You can un-mute the sound by following the below procedure:

Click the sound icon in taskbar. (Near to the clock at the right bottom).

Open Mixer.

Now open any page in Firefox which plays some sound. A YouTube video will do the job. Make sure it is playing.

Now watch in Windows Mixer a separate tab with Firefox logo will appear.

If it is on mute, un-mute it.

Don’t blame Vista for this. Its either your manual effort or some other software is the culprit behind it. This should work for most of you, but if still you can’t hear anything follow the next step.

2. Upgrade your flash:

Try upgrading your flash. It can be downloaded from the Adobe’s Website here. You must be thinking other forums and websites suggest to downgrade the version but why are we saying to upgrade it. The answer is simple would you like a buggy version of a software or an improved and advanced version. The decision is yours.

3. Firefox Plugin’s:

Make sure you have appropriate plugins for your media. You can find them here.

The problem should be solved by now. But if it doesn’t, then you should create a brand new Firefox Profile and then check if the sound could be heard in it or not. If it does then some of your Firefox plug-in is interrupting your Firefox sound.

The “soon” means its just “few weeks” away now. It has been more than a year when Mozilla, the company behind the great browser started working on the mobile version. The next big cake from Mozilla after Firefox 3 will be when the Firefox for mobile’s or Firefox Mobile Browser will come in existence.

Firefox is currently under development at Mozilla Labs and they will be releasing the alpha version or initial testing version soon.

The “few weeks” period can be of the ending 2008 and the beginning months of year 2009. Initially when its development was started, the rumors were floating that a fully baked version or the final release of Firefox Mobile 1.0 will be made in 2010.

The browser is currently code-named as “Fennic”, the mobile version of Firefox Browser. Let’s hope we get the Firefox Mobile alpha cookie very soon, though the finally baked one will not be available before 2010.

But unable to forget the functionality of Mozilla’s Firefox and its add-on support? How about getting both of them together? Then Chromifox is just the right theme for you.

Chromifox is a Firefox theme inspired by the looks of Google’s Chrome Browser bringing the same light feeling to Firefox. Chromifox theme is developed by TC Watson, keeping in mind the simplicity of Chrome Browser.

The Chromifox theme works perfectly on Windows, Linux as well as Mac OS X. Below is the screenshot of the theme as it is seen working in Firefox on Windows Xp:

Google’s Chrome is an extremely fast and simple browser as compared to the Firefox. The speed of Chrome can’t be mixed in Firefox but the looks can & Watson has done it perfectly.
